The General Services (GS) is a unix system running IBM's AIX unix operating system. It provides Dalhousie faculty, staff, and students with programming languages and software in support of university teaching/learning, research, administration, and other related activities through programming and computation.
To have your NetID enabled to use GS, contact your workgroup manager, one of the ITS Help Desks, or the Computer Centre reception desk. After GS access has been enabled, you must change your NetID password (to set it on GS) before you can login to the GS system.
If students are required to use the GS system for a course, we ask the course professor to contact the Computer Centre reception desk to have GS access enabled for all students in the course (rather than have each student request it individually).
The GS.Dal.CA host may be accessed using a termial emulation (telnet or ssh) program from any of ITS' student computer labs or any computer that is connected to the Internet.
The system is usually available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Scheduled down times are announced on the system's login message and on the System Status Page.
