Internet Connections

Networks and Systems builds and maintains the campus computer network. The campus network is a heterogenous network composed of a fibre backbone between and within major buildings and copper to the desktop from switches located in wiring closets in the buildings. Ethernet is available at various speeds: 10 Mbps (standard desktop), 100Mbps (power users' desktop and servers) and 1000 Mbps (specialized applications). Check out the Network Connections for details on ordering a network connection in your office.

Laptop connections (live ethernet jacks) are located in many public areas and labs around campus. These can be used by students, faculty and staff who have registered their laptops for 'roaming' on the campus network. Students who use their laptops in their residence rooms are automatically registered for using these connections. Users can contact the Computer Centre Help Desks in order to register their machines.

Wireless connection is available several locations on campus for students, faculty and staff.

Virtual Private Networking is available for those who require a Dalhousie IP address to connect to networked resources that are normally restricted to campus. This requires installation of a client application on your computer. The application will request your Dalhousie username/password combination in order to establish your identity and grant access to the network.

Guest Account System is available for full time Dalhousie faculty and staff to issue temporary guest accounts. Several IT services, including wireless and Lab access can be issued to guests via this utility.

NOTE: If your connection to the internet is blocked please contact the Computer Centre Help Desks.
