Dalhousie will be holding its second annual Data Protection Day event on January 27th 2009. Hosted by John Bullock, Information Security Manager for Dalhousie, and presented by Dwight Fischer, AVP-CIO for Dalhousie's Information Technology Services. The presentation will include topics such as safe computing practices, online services for data handling, and current privacy initiatives within the university.

The talk is open to the media and other interested parties. In support of international Data Protection Day, created by the European Union, Dalhousie is partnering with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as well as the Canadian Association of Professional Access and Privacy Administrators (CAPAPA).  Sandy Hounsell, Senior Analyst, Research, Education and Outreach, Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada will be speaking. "Many businesses fail to adequately protect this sensitive information, leaving it vulnerable to hackers and identity thieves. It is within this context that Privacy Commissioners around the world must continuously promote the value of privacy in a global society, " said Hounsell.

John Bullock will be focusing on some key aspects of the privacy world. “Faculty, staff, researchers, and others in the Dalhousie community need to be aware that they are working with information they are legally and morally obligated to protect. The information includes student grades, research participant data, employee financials, and many other bits of confidential information", says John Bullock. Topics of interest will include secure computing best practices for on and off-campus, online services for data handling, and the current and future state of privacy initiatives at the university.

The talk will be an opportunity for some networking and sharing of knowledge for all in this critical field. Please join Dalhousie in developing the local data protection community and raising awareness of the importance of data privacy for everyone.
