ITS Intern Program

Information Technology Services is launching a new part-time intern program for Dalhousie second to fourth year students. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in one of the most advanced Information Services academic departments in Atlantic Canada. 

Interns will be hired in their second year of study and will advance through the program by developing skills in an entire cross-section of services offered by ITS. Each term, Interns will be assigned to a new job with increasing responsibilities, skill requirements, etc.

Interns may stay on an assignment for a maximum of two terms, depending on needs within Dalhousie and the career goals of the student. Each Intern will be expected to work 6 to 15 hours per week and a minimum of 2 terms per school year.

Upon completion of the program students will be able to articulate clear examples of their skills in:

  • Client and customer service
  • Initiative and innovation
  • Internal and external communications
  • Teamwork and relationship building
  • Specific technical applications
  • Analysis and judgment
  • Training others

 

Students will gain valuable exposure and coaching in:

  • Applications Development
  • Communications and marketing strategy and delivery
  • Project implementation
  • Work in an institutional / academic environment

 

Benefits for Students

  • Students will have ensured employment for the remainder of their undergraduate degree studies (3 years).
  • Interns will be paid  $11.00 - $14.00 per hour with performance based increases
  • Interns will progress in level, scope and develop and be able to demonstrate a broad range of skills that support their career development
  • Each Intern will be assigned an ITS Director as their mentor.  Interns will discuss their progress and give feedback on their level of satisfaction with the program. Interns will be encouraged to discuss their career goals, how their work in the program will supplement and support those goals and discuss progress, directions, and opportunities, etc.
  • At the end of each term, Interns will participate in a formal review of their job performance with their supervisor. This will assist the supervisor and intern to assess the benefits of the previous term and make plans for the next.
  • Successful completion of the Program will result in formal recognition of this achievement from Information Technology Services bearing an official seal or logo of the university.
  • At the completion of the program, all interns will be provided with a letter of reference from Dalhousie University to support their career portfolio.
  • At the end of their first year in program, participants are required to meet with a Career Advisor from the Career Services Centre. Participants get expert advice on how to make the most of this opportunity. They will learn how to aim for, and articulate, achievements that will support their careers.

 

Qualifications Requirements

  • Students from all Dalhousie faculties may apply for this internship. Well-rounded, highly motivated and enthusiastic applicants with an aptitude for Information Technology will be given priority for acceptance (e.g. A Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences or Faculty of Science student who is an avid computer user with an interest in networking or unique applications.)
  • Enrollment in a Computer Science academic program is NOT required.
  • The Program is available only to students in non-co-op programs.
  • Interns must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above to remain in the Program.
